A stoppage-time spot-kick from Dominik Szoboszlai prevented Matthias Jaissle from securing victory in his first match in the technical area at St James’ Park.
Newcastle moved ahead inside the first five minutes when newcomer Amar Dedic pushed the ball forward to William Osula, who found Anthony Elanga with a clever pass, and Elanga finished past Alisson.
Liverpool drew level in the 55th minute when Cody Gakpo collected Ryan Gravenberch’s through ball and fired a low drive beyond Hornicek.
However, Newcastle restored their advantage just two minutes later as Yoane Wissa held off a pair of Liverpool players before setting up substitute Joe Willock, who chose his spot with precision to make it 2-1.
It appeared Newcastle had done enough for all three points until Lewis Hall brought down Victor Munoz, allowing Dominik Szoboszlai to score from the penalty spot.
Here is how Newcastle performed against Liverpool:
Lukas Hornicek 7
Beaten on two occasions but produced some excellent stops on his first appearance.
Amar Dedic 8
An impressive debut from the player signed from Benfica. Involved in the opening goal and dealt with Liverpool’s attacking threat effectively throughout.
Malick Thiaw 8
A commanding display from the German international who threw himself into challenges, ending with seven blocked shots.
Sven Botman 7
His difficult pre-season is behind him. A much-improved performance as he dealt with danger confidently. Produced an excellent sliding tackle on Munoz late on.
Lewis Hall 7
A solid showing in front of Thomas Tuchel. Set the standard with a well-timed challenge on Isak. Had Jaissle showing appreciation throughout, and Tuchel may struggle to ignore him now.
Considered responsible for the foul on Munoz that led to the late penalty.
Sean Steur 7
Still gaining experience but this was a steady Premier League debut. Arrived a fraction too late to prevent Gakpo before he was substituted.
Lewis Miley 8
Appears a player full of belief. Produced several important passes and avoided a booking in the first half. Exactly what he required following his injury absence.
Anthony Elanga 8
Has his doubters but quietened a few with a composed finish here. Twelve months on from an opening-day miss, demonstrated the quality he can show on his day. Managed only one cross but was accurate with his passes overall.
Yoane Wissa 9
Without scoring but an enormous contribution as he showed his value. Powerful and solid to create the crucial second goal. Departed to applause from the crowd.
Harvey Barnes 7
Did not create enough danger despite working hard.
William Osula 7
Played through discomfort and claimed an early assist. Had just 19 touches but maximised his time on the ball.
