St James’ Park provided the perfect setting as Liverpool and Newcastle United supporters came together to honour Kevin Keegan in a display of affection, respect and admiration.
Ahead of the season’s curtain-raiser at the famous ground, fans from both clubs united in their tribute to the legendary figure.
Supporters were given cards bearing Keegan’s name, while the Leazes End was transformed to echo his iconic number 7 jersey.
From the Liverpool section on Level 7, a simple banner read Keegan, underscoring the deep mutual esteem held for the former England international.
Speaking before the match, Matthias Jaissle expressed his thoughts on the occasion. He noted that the day would see everyone at the stadium unite to commemorate Keegan’s life and remarkable contributions to football. Despite his relatively short time at the club, Jaissle said he had already encountered numerous wonderful anecdotes and recollections about Keegan’s tenure as both player and manager. He described the profound influence Keegan had on the club and how he served as an inspiration to anyone fortunate enough to follow in his footsteps, something Jaissle felt privileged to do. Jaissle made clear that Keegan transcended the role of mere football manager, embodying the qualities of a true gentleman who made time for everyone and instilled in supporters the belief that the impossible could be achieved. He voiced nothing but respect for Keegan’s football philosophy, which combined a desire to win with an equally strong commitment to entertainment. Jaissle anticipated an emotional atmosphere before kick-off and expressed confidence that followers of both teams would demonstrate to the world the immense significance Keegan held for them all.
