Jaissle begins Newcastle tenure as Magpies host Liverpool at St James’ Park

Newcastle Begin New Era Against Liverpool in Season Opener

The Magpies kick off their 2026-27 top-flight season this afternoon as they welcome Liverpool to St James’ Park, with Matthias Jaissle overseeing his maiden competitive match in charge of the Tyneside club.

It has been a transformative summer on Tyneside, with significant changes both on and off the pitch. Jaissle has taken the managerial reins, and six fresh faces have arrived through the door, with goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek among those expected to make his debut this afternoon.

The middle of the park will see Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba battle it out for a starting berth, while Amar Dedic appears set to fill the right-back position given Tino Livramento’s continued absence from match action. In attack, Bazoumana Toure could be preferred on the left flank, though Harvey Barnes has enjoyed an impressive pre-season schedule.

The afternoon promises to be a poignant occasion as supporters from both clubs unite to honour Kevin Keegan, whose passing was confirmed last month. The former England manager and player enjoyed legendary status on both Tyneside and Merseyside during his distinguished career, which began in Scunthorpe. The Wor Flags group has coordinated a special tifo display spanning all four stands of the stadium, while a minute’s silence will be observed prior to kick-off. Kevin’s relatives alongside a selection of former players will be in attendance as special guests of the club. Meanwhile, Scunthorpe United followers are collecting donations to establish a permanent memorial garden in the Iron’s hometown.

With Joelinton unavailable due to injury and Livramento still building his match fitness, Fabian Schar, Dan Burn and Lewis Miley are all likely to feature despite abbreviated pre-season involvement.

All the latest team news, build-up coverage, match commentary and player ratings will be available throughout the afternoon.
