Newcastle remain anticipated to conduct further transfer business before the current window closes, pursuing both arrivals and departures.
At the start of Thursday’s media briefing before Newcastle’s encounter with Liverpool on Sunday, Matthias Jaissle addressed one of our press pack colleagues.
The Press Association’s Damian Spellman is stepping away after 36 years covering the sport, and Jaissle presented him with a Newcastle squad shirt bearing the name Spellman 36 ahead of his last assignment, the Liverpool fixture on Sunday.
Although the German coach has remained tight-lipped regarding recruitment matters during his initial weeks in charge, when Damian questioned whether further transfer activity could be anticipated this summer, Jaissle humorously directed the pressure toward sporting director Ross Wilson, suggesting business might be completed before the retirement commences.
Jaissle suggested with a smile that there was a chance something could happen before Spellman’s retirement, which would place pressure on the sporting director. He noted that there would still be time after the retirement as well. He stated that Newcastle wanted to be efficient in the transfer market but also smart in their approach, doing only the right things without feeling hectic or pressured from outside, and that they would proceed in their own way.
Newcastle have already secured six new players this summer, bringing in goalkeepers Lukas Hornicek and Ewen Jaouen, right-back Amar Dedic, midfielders Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba, and winger Bazoumana Toure.
However, the squad still contains gaps, with a seasoned central midfielder representing the primary target. Securing a natural number ten will almost certainly feature on the agenda, given the current absence of an obvious candidate for that role in Jaissle’s favoured 4-2-3-1 system.
Additional departures may also occur. Joe Willock enters the final twelve months of his contract, and Turkish club Besiktas have demonstrated significant interest in acquiring him.
Likewise, Nick Pope is approaching the end of his current deal, and Jaissle disclosed during the Valencia trip earlier this month that negotiations regarding his future are underway, with clubs including Celtic and Hull City monitoring the situation.
Jacob Murphy represents another player whose plans remain uncertain after entering the concluding year of his contract, though preliminary interest from Everton has diminished since the summer began. Should the 31-year-old depart, Newcastle would likely need to pursue another wide attacker to fill the void.
