Matthias Jaissle is just days away from overseeing his first competitive Newcastle United fixture, with the incoming head coach completing his last preparations for Sunday’s Premier League opener against Liverpool.
The German has been at the club for less than a month, yet will take charge of a transformed squad at St James’ Park and face several important decisions.
The 23-year-old was spotted rejoining first-team activities on Wednesday after missing all of pre-season following the calf problem sustained during England international commitments in June. Both he and Dan Burn have managed only brief appearances throughout the summer, and Jaissle will face questions about whether any of them could potentially complete the full match.

When pressed on who should feature and how many new arrivals might debut, Jaissle spoke about one defender’s suitability. He noted that this player offers versatility across both full-back roles and can also operate centrally. The coach highlighted that familiarity with the club’s tactical approach is valuable when time for on-field preparation is limited. He expressed confidence in the player’s readiness, mentioning that while joining later than some teammates, the individual appeared in good condition and accumulated match practice with his previous club.
Newcastle have finalised an agreement to acquire the Woolsington Hall estate for constructing their proposed state-of-the-art training headquarters.
The initiative carries a £190 million price tag and involves obtaining 260 acres positioned to the south of the city’s airport, with completion targeted for the 2029/30 campaign.
The purchase remains conditional on securing planning consent, with the club’s submission anticipated in early 2027 and expected to receive backing from Newcastle City Council.
The development will provide cutting-edge facilities for the men’s senior side and academy, while maintaining adaptability for women’s and girls’ provision.
The plans fulfil ambitions held by former owner Sir John Hall, who originally acquired the site in 1994 with the intention of using it for the club’s youth development.
