Anthony Gordon found himself at the centre of things as Barcelona secured victory in their last pre-season fixture.
The ex-Newcastle United wideman received a mixed response from Spanish journalists after Barcelona completed their pre-season schedule by defeating the Egyptian side Al Ahly 2-1 at the Nou Camp. First-half strikes from 18-year-old talent Hamza Abdelkarim and a Raphinha spot-kick put the hosts ahead before Zico pulled one back early in the second period. Despite the concession, Barcelona maintained control to keep the Joan Gamper Trophy.
Flick made extensive alterations at the interval, including introducing Gordon, who operated in two roles: initially on the left side before moving into a central striking position. He certainly made an impression, seeing one effort ruled out and winning a penalty, although the resulting spot-kick was kept out.
Nevertheless, Gordon managed to win approval from certain local publications. Mundo Deportivo labelled him inventive and noted improvement compared to his Basel showing, adding he nearly finished with an elaborate chip and showed intelligence to win a penalty, though he passed on the chance to score from it.
La Vanguardia, acknowledging his set-piece history with Newcastle, observed the third goal appeared destined to arrive from another penalty following a foul on Gordon as he sprinted clear. The Englishman, who had previously taken spot-kicks for the Magpies, requested possession, but keeper El Shenawy read the situation correctly.
The Barca Blaugranes website offered more enthusiastic endorsement, describing Gordon as once again delivering an impressive performance following his second-half appearance. The former Newcastle man continues adjusting to his fresh responsibilities but has integrated seamlessly at the Catalan club. Whether deployed by Flick initially as a replacement for Raphinha or repositioned elsewhere in attack, his industry will earn him recognition while his attacking qualities will help Barcelona secure results. It was unfortunate he could not convert the penalty he had won, though early signs remain promising for the Englishman.
SPORT awarded Gordon a 6/10 mark, providing a less optimistic assessment of his contribution. He mixed encouraging moments with patchy form, cleverly winning a penalty he then took himself without converting. Plenty of application but variable precision.
Barcelona commenced their La Liga title defence at Elche on Sunday, with Gordon pushing for a place in the first eleven.
