Newcastle complete £29.5m signing of Bosnia defender Dedic from Benfica

Amar Dedic finalized his much-publicized transfer to Tyneside on Tuesday morning

The Bosnia and Herzegovina international has put pen to paper on a five-year contract at St James’ Park after completing his £29.5million switch from Benfica. The 24-year-old, who operates primarily as a right-back but can also feature on the left, revealed that the incredible atmosphere he experienced during Benfica’s visit to Newcastle last season played a significant role in his decision to move to the club.

In his first interview since the move was confirmed, Dedic discussed how playing against the Magpies in that 3-0 defeat at St James’ Park gave him a taste of what the club and its supporters are about. He described the passion from the crowd as incredible and said the huge energy he felt at the stadium made him want to join.

The defender, who previously represented RB Salzburg, Marseille and Benfica, is now relishing the prospect of competing in the Premier League for the first time. He explained that linking up again with Matthias Jaissle was another major factor in his choice. Dedic credited Jaissle with giving him his first real opportunity at senior level during their time together in Austria, where they clinched the Bundesliga title in 2023. He said Jaissle pushed him hard, was always honest with him even when his performances weren’t good, and provided him with the patience and support needed to develop as a player.

The right-back, who eventually took over the captain’s armband at Salzburg before moving to France and then Portugal, said reuniting with his former manager on Tyneside was something that strongly appealed to him. He described Jaissle as someone with boundless energy who always gives everything, and said he was really happy to be working with him again.

Dedic also gave Newcastle supporters an insight into what they can expect from him, promising to give his all for the club. He said he loves the attacking side of the game, with his style built around high energy, rapid bursts forward and skill on the ball. The defender added that he wants to battle for the club and its fans and is hoping to demonstrate those qualities on the pitch.
