Alan Shearer has called on Newcastle United supporters to show unwavering commitment to new first-team manager Matthias Jaissle as the club enters what promises to be a difficult campaign.
The beloved Geordie favourite has observed alongside fellow fans as the club transferred Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes to other teams, bringing in promising but untested players Sean Steur, Aladji Bamba and Bazoumana Toure as replacements.
While Shearer acknowledges the economic logic behind several of those transfers, he is worried that removing strong personalities from the squad will significantly affect results this term.
Jaissle is also encountering English top-flight management for the first time, and the former striker has implored the club’s supporters to offer the German complete backing as he begins a fresh chapter for the Tyneside outfit.
Unlike numerous analysts, who have suggested Newcastle could face a fight against the drop, Shearer does not anticipate a survival struggle materialising, though he has also dismissed any prospect of securing European competition places.
Speaking to Betfair, Shearer explained the club’s altered strategy. He noted the difficulty of repeatedly losing key performers and referenced the impact on both Newcastle and Villa supporters regarding Financial Fair Play regulations.
Shearer pointed out that the team concluded the previous league campaign in 12th position despite having Tonali, Gordon and Guimaraes available. This result illustrates Newcastle’s actual standing and the necessity to sell established players while blooding young, fresh faces. He cautioned that such transitions invariably bring difficult periods alongside the loss of a manager.
Shearer anticipated a vastly different season ahead, describing it as challenging because if selling star players and replacing them with young, energetic, ambitious talents were straightforward, every club would pursue that approach.
His primary worry centres on losing influential characters. While the team finished 12th and those players did not enjoy their best season individually, they provided vital presence in the changing room. Removing those three, combined with the departure of Kieran Trippier who commanded significant respect among the squad, means losing leaders and experienced presences and replacing them with youthful, untested players making their first steps in the Premier League. That represents his greatest concern beyond anything else.
He also believed it worth considering that despite their quality, the team still managed only a 12th-place finish. This season represents uncharted territory with a young, inexperienced manager who will require every ounce of help and support available. Combined with the incoming players who are similarly young and untested, though experienced campaigners like Schar, Dan Burn and Joelinton remain, he genuinely did not anticipate a European position come May.
