With Alexander Isak ready to return to St James’ Park for the first time since leaving Newcastle, his former teammates have shared their thoughts on the reunion.
The Swedish forward successfully pushed through a move to Liverpool after last summer’s lengthy transfer saga. Newcastle had no desire to part with their star striker, but Isak refused to train in an attempt to force through the switch. He later released a scathing statement accusing the club of failing to honour commitments. The Magpies eventually accepted their fate and sanctioned the sale for a British record £130million.
When Liverpool travelled to St James’ Park twelve months ago, the deal remained uncompleted, so Isak avoided attending. He also sat out the corresponding Anfield match in January. However, Sunday will see the forward finally face his old club as both sides begin their new campaigns.
While the welcome from home supporters is anticipated to be hostile, relations with his former teammates appear far warmer based on remarks from last season. After the transfer went through, Dan Burn was asked about Isak’s parting words to the squad.
The defender mentioned that Isak posted in the group chat simply to say goodbye and thank everyone for the good times, and the squad responded positively. Burn noted that the player is getting what he wanted, and Newcastle must now concentrate on working with the squad available. He recognised the disappointment among the club’s supporters, stating that Isak ranks among the top three forwards globally and any Newcastle fan would naturally want him to stay, but transfers are part of the sport and players have moved on before. Burn added that Isak remains a friend, making the situation difficult, though he’s pleased the club received good value and the player secured his desired move.
Although reports suggested certain unnamed squad members were incensed by Isak’s behaviour, others publicly offered their best wishes. Sven Botman wrote on social media that their relationship evolved from teammates to one of his closest friendships, requiring no further explanation and wishing him success in his next adventure.
Meanwhile, Anthony Gordon, now at Barcelona, posted a similar sentiment expressing that despite the circumstances and what transpired, it was a privilege to share a pitch with him, noting one of the best on-field connections he’d experienced and describing him as an excellent person and teammate while wishing him only the best.
