Dan Burn to captain Newcastle United as leadership group rebuilds

Newcastle United are set to introduce fresh faces to their senior leadership structure this campaign, with the club’s updated hierarchy yet to be confirmed.

Dan Burn has been confirmed as club captain for the upcoming season, with Joelinton installed as his deputy following the departures of several established figures from last term’s leadership group.

Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier, and Jamaal Lascelles all featured in the previous regime’s senior leadership structure but have since departed St James’ Park.

Pope has also seen his influence diminished after slipping to third-choice goalkeeper under the new coaching staff.

This leaves Burn and Murphy as the sole survivors from the previous leadership group.

The club resisted significant offers from Nottingham Forest for Murphy during the transfer window, prioritising his experience and familiarity with the club’s culture over potential transfer fees.

Head coach Jaissle indicated following the pre-season defeat to Bayer Leverkusen in August that the leadership group composition remained under consideration, though he confirmed at that time that Burn would captain the side this season.

Burn outlined the club’s revised approach in the official matchday programme, highlighting the construction of a younger and more dynamic squad.

He noted that several new arrivals bring significant international pedigree, citing the acquisition of Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City as an example.

Burn emphasised that the squad contains a suitable blend of experienced professionals to guide younger players, mentioning Botman and Thiaw as individuals who have been at the club for several seasons and are approaching their peak years.

Hall was also referenced as a long-serving member of the squad.

Hall had attracted considerable transfer interest from Manchester United throughout the summer transfer window, though Newcastle maintained throughout that the England international was not available for transfer.
