Marcus Rashford remains on Manchester United’s roster heading into the new top-flight campaign, though former club manager Sam Allardyce has encouraged Newcastle United to pursue the forward.
Allardyce, who previously managed both Newcastle and the England national team, believes his former club should attempt to sign Rashford from their rivals. With the transfer window closing soon, Allardyce thinks the England international would strengthen Matthias Jaissle’s squad. Over the summer, Barcelona declined the opportunity to bring Rashford to Spain, opting instead to sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle.
While Newcastle have invested in young talent by acquiring Ivorian winger Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim, Allardyce argues Rashford would help compensate for Gordon’s departure. Discussing the matter on No Tippy Tappy Football, Allardyce pointed out that Newcastle received substantial funds for Gordon. He explained that if Rashford commands weekly wages of £250,000 to £300,000, exceeding what Newcastle’s current players earn, the money generated from Gordon’s sale could cover that difference. Allardyce is 71 years old.
He acknowledged that financial fair play regulations might complicate efforts to sign someone earning as much as Rashford, but proposed that a temporary move could resolve this obstacle if Manchester United are willing to cooperate. Michael Carrick has reintegrated Rashford into the first-team setup following his 18-month loan spell away from the club.
The 28-year-old featured for half an hour during Manchester United’s concluding pre-season match against AC Milan. Carrick stated ahead of the Milan fixture that Rashford belongs to the club and that the situation is not unusual, adding that he handles Rashford precisely as he would any other squad member. Carrick observed that football presents various challenges and one must navigate different phases throughout a lengthy career, which never proceeds without difficulties. He emphasised the importance of progressing forward rather than dwelling on the past, noting that having Rashford available this week has been beneficial and that he offers unique qualities to the team.
Newcastle will commence their Premier League season with a home fixture against Liverpool on Sunday and have continued strengthening their roster in preparation. Right-back Amar Dedic arrived from Benfica in a deal worth slightly over £30m. The Bosnia international became Jaissle’s first acquisition since the Austrian succeeded Eddie Howe as manager, with the pair having previously worked together in Austria.
Dedic explained that reuniting with Jaissle proved a significant deciding factor, as they share a strong understanding and the manager recognises what he can contribute on the pitch.
