Hall’s England displays prove he is country’s best left-back, says Newcastle reporter

Lewis Hall has impressed on international duty with England over the past week, underlining the view held at Newcastle United that he is the leading left-back in English football.

Since his move from Chelsea three years ago, Newcastle have developed Hall into one of the most consistent left-backs in the Premier League, a process that culminated in a standout performance in the Champions League knockout stages last season.

When Barcelona visited St James’ Park, much of the pre-match discussion centred on how the Newcastle side would cope with Lamine Yamal.

Hall limited the Barcelona winger’s influence and produced a display widely regarded as one of the finest individual performances by a Newcastle player in recent seasons.

Hall began the new campaign strongly under Matthias Jaissle and signed a new contract on Tyneside, ending speculation about a potential move to Manchester United.

He was subsequently recalled to the England squad.

After missing the 3-2 defeat to Spain, he has started both of England’s subsequent wins over Czechia and Croatia, operating down the left flank alongside Anthony Gordon, who left Newcastle for Barcelona over the summer.

His form at international level has strengthened his case for inclusion, and the 22-year-old is now receiving the kind of widespread recognition on the national stage that Newcastle supporters have long felt he merited.

Hall grew up supporting Newcastle and has spoken about his connection with the club, including during a conversation with reporters in the mixed zone following Newcastle’s win over Hull.
