Newcastle United have begun discussions with Manchester City regarding a possible transfer for midfielder Nico Gonzalez as Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes have left the club.
According to The Athletic, conversations about the Spanish player are among several exploratory talks currently being held by the Tyneside club.
Nico featured 41 times for City throughout the previous campaign, but began only two matches following January, including the season-ending fixture where Pep Guardiola selected numerous backup players.
The 24-year-old midfielder stated he had no concerns about his limited opportunities at the Etihad following his £52m transfer from Porto in January 2025.
Nico arrived at the club from Portugal to fill the gap created by Rodri’s ACL injury that season, as Guardiola’s team lacked depth in the centre of the park.
The Spanish international was unable to fully replicate the impact of Ballon d’Or winner Rodri, operating more as a dynamic box-to-box player rather than a controlling midfielder like his compatriot.
The report suggests Newcastle believe they can maximise Nico’s abilities with regular first-team football after the high-profile exits of Tonali and Guimaraes.
