Newcastle United have unveiled proposals to construct a cutting-edge training facility at Woolsington Hall.
The club has completed a deal to acquire the historic Woolsington Hall estate on the southern side of the city’s airport, where they intend to develop a world-class training complex.
The project carries a price tag of £190million and will encompass 260 acres of land. The new facilities are pencilled in for completion ahead of the 2029/30 campaign.
The proposal remains contingent on securing planning consent, with the club set to file its application with Newcastle City Council in early 2027. Approval from the local authority is anticipated.
The blueprints for Woolsington Hall include state-of-the-art performance amenities for the senior men’s side and the youth academy, while maintaining scope to accommodate provisions for the women’s and girls’ teams.
The initiative fulfills the ambition originally envisioned by former chairman Sir John Hall, who acquired the site in 1994 with the intention of establishing academy facilities there.
A club statement indicated the project demonstrates substantial long-term commitment from owners PIF and RB Sports & Media to the club’s future.
Brad Miller, the club’s Chief Operating Officer, stated this represents a homecoming given Sir John Hall’s original concept for the site during the 1990s. He noted Woolsington Hall would serve as an excellent location for the new complex and the club was pleased to have concluded the acquisition agreement. He explained the team is developing ambitious plans for the estate involving the restoration and improvement of listed buildings and parkland, which would remain central to the design. The objective is to construct world-class facilities for players and staff in a sensitive manner that highlights the site’s natural beauty and protects it for future generations. He acknowledged this is a highly intricate undertaking with a thorough planning process ahead, but the club would show how it intends to create something iconic that supporters, the community and the wider region could take pride in. The club anticipated consulting with planning authorities, fans and other stakeholders regarding these ambitious proposals, with the goal of progressing the project in a sustainable and responsible way to deliver a facility of which the city and region could be extremely proud.
David Hopkinson, Newcastle United’s Chief Executive, described this as a significant milestone for the club. He explained that subject to planning approval, the proposed performance complex would establish the finest performance environment globally for the club’s teams. The development would include purpose-built amenities designed to foster sustained success going forward, enabling players, coaches and staff to perform at their highest level daily. A comprehensive planning application would be submitted detailing not only the vision but also how historic features of the estate, its biodiversity and wildlife habitats would be protected and enhanced, and how the club would be a responsible neighbour. He expressed gratitude to all those who had contributed to reaching this stage and extended thanks to Sir John and the Hall family.
